Showing Up for Racial Justice Education Fund (SURJ-EF) is a national network of groups and individuals working for a world where racial and economic justice thrive and where all communities are free from violence and fear. Through community organizing, mobilizing, and education, SURJ-EF works to undermine white supremacy and move white people to act as part of a multi-racial majority for justice.
SURJ-EF is answering a call made decades ago by Black movement leaders for white organizers to dramatically increase their work in majority-white communities, especially working class communities, to build a massive base of support that would align itself alongside people-of-color led movements in order to win transformative change in this country.
Our organization was founded by Southerners, in 2009, and deeply shaped by the brilliant Southern culture and history of resistance to injustice. Highlander Research & Education Center, one of the Movement’s anchor institutions based in the South, was our first fiscal sponsor, providing organizational infrastructure as we grew during our first 8 years. Today the SURJ-EF network has over 125 chapters across the country, as well as several deep-organizing initiatives in communities of the rural South. Chapters primarily work at the local and regional level alongside people-of-color led organizations working for racial and economic justice and organizing for fundamental change in the justice system, mass incarceration and police accountability.

Our organizing scale and methods are long term and deep, working closely to build relationships, community, concrete engagement, and active reflection with an inclusive awareness of the spiritual dimensions of the work for justice and the beloved community.
